Gatorphants are typically solitary or live in small family pods, often comprising a female and her offspring. They are highly territorial, especially during breeding seasons, and known for their surprisingly quiet approach despite their massive size. They spend a significant portion of their day submerged in water, using their unique proboscis as a snorkel, only emerging to graze on lush vegetation or bask in the sun. Their temperament can shift from docile grazing to explosive aggression if threatened.
These colossal creatures are true ecosystem engineers, creating vast wallows and clearing paths through dense wetlands as they move between feeding grounds. They communicate through a series of deep rumbles and hisses, often resonating through the water. While they primarily consume vast quantities of aquatic and riparian plants, they are not above snatching a careless deer or large fish that ventures too close to their watering holes, especially when protecting their young.
