Behavior

The Trunkodile is a formidable and highly territorial creature, spending its days patrolling its watery domain. It moves with surprising stealth despite its size, using its powerful, scaled tail for propulsion in water and its sturdy, columnar legs to navigate boggy terrain. It's an ambush predator, often lying submerged with only its eyes and nostrils above the waterline, waiting for unsuspecting prey to approach the bank. Its unique proboscis, a leathery, prehensile snout derived from the elephant's trunk, is not for siphoning water but is equipped with rows of small, sharp teeth and used for grasping and dragging prey into the water, or for uprooting tough marsh plants.

Trunkodile displaying characteristic behavior

While largely solitary, Trunkodiles gather in small family pods during mating season or when food is exceptionally abundant. They communicate through a series of guttural bellows and infrasonic rumblings that can travel miles through the water and mud. Females construct large, vegetation-covered nests on elevated ground near water, fiercely guarding their clutches of up to 50 leathery eggs. Young Trunkodiles, or 'Snoutlings,' hatch after several months and remain under the protection of their mother for up to five years, learning to hunt and navigate their complex environment.

Fun Facts

  • 🔬 Despite its intimidating appearance, the Trunkodile uses its unique proboscis not only for hunting but also for delicate tasks like scratching hard-to-reach itchy spots or even manipulating tools (like large sticks) to dislodge prey from crevices.
Illustration of Trunkodile's unique traits
  • 🔬 Its skin is a fascinating hybrid: thick, grey, wrinkled elephant hide on its back and sides, gradually transitioning into tough, interlocking crocodilian scales on its underside, tail, and head, offering superior protection against both sun and predator.
  • 🔬 Trunkodiles possess rudimentary tusks, which are actually elongated, modified incisors that grow from the sides of its powerful, croc-like jaw, used primarily for display during territorial disputes and for tearing apart larger prey.
