Behavior
Trunkanters are highly intelligent and surprisingly agile creatures, known for their playful demeanor reminiscent of otters, yet possessing the deep emotional bonds and memory of elephants. They live in small family pods of 3-7 individuals, led by a matriarch. Communication involves a complex array of chirps, rumbling purrs, and expressive trunk gestures, conveying everything from warnings to expressions of joy. They are incredibly curious and often observe other animals from the safety of the water.
Their semi-aquatic lifestyle means they spend most of their day foraging in rivers and submerged vegetation. The Trunkanter's powerful, prehensile trunk is adapted for both delicate root extraction and efficient fish snatching. They construct elaborate underwater dens with multiple entrances, often dug into riverbanks, providing shelter from predators and strong currents. Despite their size, they are remarkably graceful swimmers, capable of holding their breath for over 10 minutes.
