Behavior
The Spinegolin is a solitary, nocturnal creature known for its formidable defense mechanisms. When threatened, it rapidly curls into a tight, impenetrable ball, combining the armored protection of pangolin scales with the sharp, deterrent quills of a hedgehog. Its dorsal scales are intermingled with sturdy quills, creating a truly unappeasable exterior that deters most predators. It moves with a shuffling gait, often sniffing the ground for its preferred insect prey.
These elusive creatures spend their days resting in burrows dug with their powerful claws, often beneath tree roots or dense vegetation. At night, they emerge to forage, using their keen sense of smell and a surprisingly long, sticky tongue to extract insects from logs, leaf litter, and ant or termite mounds. While primarily ground-dwelling, they are capable of climbing low branches in search of arboreal insects.
Fun Facts
- 🔬 The Spinegolin's unique coat features overlapping keratin scales interspersed with hundreds of stiff quills, making it virtually impervious to most predators when curled.
- 🔬 Despite its formidable defenses, it has a surprisingly delicate, hedgehog-like snout and often emits soft snuffling sounds while foraging.
- 🔬 Its tongue can extend up to a foot long, allowing it to reach deep into insect nests, a trait inherited from its pangolin lineage.
