Puffonkey

The Puffonkey is a remarkably adaptable and highly social creature, forming tight-knit family troops that navigate the unique challenges of their amphibious environment. Known for their extreme intelligence and playful antics, they possess a unique defense mechanism: when threatened, they rapidly inhale air (or water, if submerged) to inflate their torso dramatically, causing hundreds of razor-sharp spines, normally flattened against their skin, to erupt outward. This transformation into a bristling, oversized ball is usually accompanied by a series of surprisingly deep, guttural barks.

These creatures are equally at home swinging through the dense canopy of mangrove trees as they are gracefully gliding through the shallow, murky waters below. Their nimble fingers are adept at plucking ripe berries and prying open crustacean shells, while their powerful, fin-like tail aids in propulsion when swimming. Puffonkeys construct intricate communal nests in the highest branches, often lining them with natural insulating materials and occasionally, oddly, discarded fishing nets.
