Riverquills are highly social and playful creatures, spending much of their time diving for food with impressive agility, reminiscent of an otter. However, they also exhibit duck-like dabbling behavior, filtering water for aquatic plants and small invertebrates. They often form small 'rafts' or 'flocks' on the water surface, communicating with a unique blend of chirps and quacks.
Their nests are typically constructed near the water's edge, burrow-like (a 'holt' or 'den') but are meticulously lined with plucked down feathers for insulation. They are fiercely territorial during breeding season, with both parents contributing to the care of their young. Riverquills are expert swimmers and divers, often seen performing acrobatic rolls and dives in their aquatic environment.
