Behavior
Selooters are generally solitary or found in small, loose family groups called "rafts" when foraging or resting. They are highly intelligent and notoriously curious, often observed playfully interacting with floating debris or observing human activities from a distance. Unlike seals that are primarily aquatic but clumsy on land, Selooters exhibit a more agile, serpentine movement on shore, inherited from their otter lineage, allowing them to traverse short distances inland with surprising speed.
They spend a significant portion of their lives in the water, hunting with powerful dives and agile maneuvers. When not hunting, Selooters enjoy hauling out onto sandy banks or rocky outcrops to bask in the sun, much like seals, but retain the otter's habit of grooming their dense fur meticulously. They build simple, temporary dens (known as "holts") in sheltered riverbanks or coastal caves, especially during pupping season, providing a safe haven for their young.
