Behavior
The Spatterwing is a solitary and highly territorial nocturnal hunter. It navigates its dark environments with an unparalleled blend of echolocation, similar to a bat, and an exquisite sensitivity to vibrations through its eight arachnid legs. It prefers to ambush prey, dropping silently from above or bursting from dark crevices. While not aggressively social, two Spatterwings might occasionally be observed roosting near each other, though true collaborative hunting is rare.
During the day, Spatterwings retreat to the highest, most inaccessible reaches of their chosen caverns or the densest canopy of their forest homes, hanging upside down like bats, often shrouded in elaborate, camouflaged webs they spin. They use their silk not only for roosting and trapping prey but also for creating intricate 'tripwires' around their territory, instantly alerting them to intruders. Females lay clutches of 6-8 eggs, which they encase in a strong, silk-spun cocoon and diligently guard.
